ejusdem generis (Lat) : of the same kind, class, or nature : a canon of construction holding that when a general word or phrase follows an enumeration of specific persons or things, the general word or phrase will be construed as applying only to the persons or things of the the class within which the specific types fell; for example, in the phrase horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, or any other barnyard animal, the general language or any other barnyard animal – would probably be held as applying only to four-leged, hoofed mammals (and thus would exclude chickens).
